About Guy Harnett
It was in 1980, while taking a class in High School, I fell in love with photography. Back then it was a simple 35mm Minolta SRT SCII Single Lens Reflex camera. It started out as an expensive hobby. For those who have not experienced the art of film, it certainly was a painstaking art form. What used to take hours and even days to manipulate an image in the darkroom, takes merely minutes with the advent of digital imaging. Add to this the fact that you would not be able to even see an image prior to processing and developing. Each image taken was carefully executed to minimize the amount of film used and time spent for processing, not to mention the costs of chemicals etc...
What started as a hobby, eventually turned into a second source of income from freelance work at the local newspaper, the Times Herald Record in Middletown NY. I was given the assignments of all that had to do with entertainment and "things-to-do" in the area. This included sessions like Dirt Track racing (stock car racing) to concerts. The most memorable event was a session with James Brown, the Godfather of soul, at a benefit concert in the Catskills. Yes, it was true, the man was at the time, the hardest working man in show bushiness. It was pretty neat having that "Press Pass" at some major events!
Today, it remains primarily a hobby. I have been slowly converting all of the old film images to digital for preservation. Looking back at some of the assignments has brought back many wonderful memories and reminds me of why I so love this form of art. Although I have fully embraced the digital photography era, I still sometimes miss the good old fashioned negatives and slide film.
While most of the images I have here are new and taken digitally, an occasional oldie but goodie may pop up that inspired me for the moment from the vast collection of images I have taken.
This is the world as seen through my eyes. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I enjoy taking and sharing them.
